Adverse Weather ahead scuttles BC Ferries Prince Rupert-Haida Gwaii transit January 1-2, 2023

as Adverse weather cancels the BC Ferries sailing schedule

The New Year is off to a challenging start for BC Ferries, with the Ferry Service cancelling its sailings today and tomorrow for the Prince Rupert - Skidegate run that connects the North Coast with Haida Gwaii.

A Service notice posted this morning outlines the decision to cancel the sailing owing to anticipated Adverse Weather on the way, with Haida Gwaii already under an WIND WARNING for the day.

The heavy weather ahead is coming from a system now approaching Haida Gwaii, which will bring strong winds  of up to 110 Kilometres per hour and heavy seas. 

The weather system is anticipated to arrive this afternoon and carry through on Haida Gwaii until Monday.

Environment Canada has also issued a STORM WARNING for Hecate Strait, with winds from the Southeast of 50 to 60 knots today and into the evening. Season will build to near 6 metres by midnight.
