Seal Cove area apartment dwellers get notice of vacancy for spring 2023

The latest round of renovations for the Prince Rupert
area is set for this spring in the Seal Cove area of the city

Plans for extensive renovations for apartments in the Harbourview complex overlooking Seal Cove will see some tenants vacating their homes, with a notice of vacancy delivered to them last week by the Vancouver based ownership.

The letter which was posted to social media today, notes of the plans to renovate the building, with an application of renoviction now in motion with the Residential Tenancy Branch.

According the correspondence to tenants posted online, the owners have put forward an offer of a 2,000 dollar payment for those who vacate their units by the end of May 2023, the period which seems to be the start point for the upcoming renovations for the building in question.

The move toward remediation of the building adds to a growing list of similar renovictions in recent months, something that adds to the housing crunch in the community.

Few options are currently available when it comes to apartment vacancies in the community, with little development having taken place in recent years.

As well, there have been few homes with additional suites developed since the renoviction concept began, though City Council has introduced bylaws and procedures to provide some incentive to home builders to create secondary suites in projects ahead.

Council as well has added to the bylaws to offer some protection for renters.

The issue of renovictions in the community has in the past been a frequent topic of discussion for Prince Rupert City Council members, who may have a new addition to their list of conversations topics to start off 2023.
