Cruise Mummy puts Prince Rupert on the naughty list from 2023

Seemingly not all that passed through the doors
of the Prince Rupert Cruise Terminal in 2023 left with
fond memories of their port call

An online travel blog that puts its focus on the Cruise industry has been collecting  port call reviews for the past cruise season from its readership.

And as we reach the end of the year, it would appear that for those who follow the UK  based Cruise Mummy travel blog, there's some work to be done locally towards the shore bound side of the Prince Rupert tourism experience.

The December 4th entry to Cruise Mummy is the 11 Worst Ports of Call for Cruise Ship Tourists, and alas, we have unfortunately made the top of that collection of eleven port call reviews.

The review which you can explore here, highlights a few key areas of concern from those that passed through the doors of the Prince Rupert Cruise Terminal and reported back to Cruise mummy.

The main focus appears to be on the appearance of the downtown core with descriptions ranging from the gentle "lacklustre" to the more worrisome impression of the place looking a tad 'skidrowish'.

Now to be fair to Civic officials, the downtown has come a fair bit along since the start of the tourism season in May, when the boarded up windows of Third West certainly made it feel like a skidrow tour,.

Many of those windows have since been tended to and the progress at the Belmont/Roses' site is truly a welcome thing of relief we imagine for tourism officials.

Other concerns for the reviewers that offered their notes to Cruise Mummy, included the excursion tour opportunities which were noted as somewhat disappointing, leaving those aboard,  fresh from exploring the area seemingly looking for a little bit more.

With this past year really a relaunch year after the complete shutdown of COVID, those comments while perhaps just a snapshot of one pool of visitors; are still likely something that those in the industry will no doubt be looking towards, that as they make plans for the season ahead and expand on their footprint for the future.

While perhaps not easy to hear, feedback is feedback and some of the notes should be taken into consideration as to how the community is presenting itself to those we seek to attract.

While the online overview is an interesting look at perceptions, we'll get a larger overview on how the Cruise season and the overall tourism season went in 2023 with next week's Tourism Prince Rupert AGM.

That session set to take place at the Prince Rupert Visitor Information Centre on Monday, December 11th from Noon to 1 PM.

Among the items for the Agenda, the President's Report and Executive Director's Report, two presentations that may provide the local assessment of how the cruise experience may have gone for 2023 in the community.

More notes on Tourism in Prince Rupert and on the North Coast can be reviewed through our archive page.

  1. Has next year’s cruise schedule been released yet? Proof will be in the pudding so to speak on whether the PRPA/GPH deal is good for PR or not
