Taking Stock: North Coast Business Scene -- December 2018

To put the bow on the holiday season and the month of December, much of our notes from our December Business tracker find Christmas shopping among the themes.

Beyond the tales from the malls, our review also explored areas of dining and services for residents from local stores and agencies

Municipal legislation towards cannabis also came to a conclusion in December, with the City of Prince Rupert drawing its cannabis zone map and setting in place the licencing fees for those that may be looking to start their own business in 2019.

Those themes and many others, can be be found as part of our review of the Commercial and economic scene in the region for the last month below:

Shopping was one of the main activities for residents of the Northwest as December got underway and for those from Prince Rupert who made the trek to Terrace to do some of theirs, a primer on how to keep your purchases safe from thieves was the focus for the Terrace RCMP.

The month got underway with something under the Christmas Tree for the City of Prince Rupert, as the city owned communication company CityWest delivered its annual distribution payment to the city, this year once again delivering 400,000 dollars to the city's financial accounts.

Rotarians once again helped unite Prince Rupert residents with their Christmas Trees, hosting their annual Christmas Tree Sale at the McBride Street tennis courts through the month

The Chamber of Commerce began the process to name the recipients of Business Excellence Awards for 2018/2019, opening up the nomination process in early December, residents of the community logged on  regularly to submit their nominations until the deadline of early January.

December brought a surge in bottled water sales in the community, that as Prince Rupert entered what has now become an extended Boil Water Notice period, the original notice which indicated a potential one week boil is now approaching the one month mark. To meet the need of the community the city's retail sector has responded by bringing additional shipments of bottled water to help lessen the burden on residents.  You can keep up to date on the latest notes on the water advisory here.

ICBC delivered some not so glad tidings of the holiday season, releasing the details of a survey that indicated that December provided for the most dangerous times for automobiles in parking lots as motorists become caught up in the shopping frenzy of the season

With the prospect of some retail cannabis locations for 2019, the City of Prince Rupert put the wrap on their lengthy review work on zoning and licencing for the retail operations, with would be local operators facing the highest application and renewal fees in Prince Rupert compared to other areas of the Northwest.  December also brought an expansion to the areas where potential cannabis retailers can locate, with a section of Park Avenue at Five Corners added to the zoning map.

While not a business, a local service provider expanded on its offerings for the community in December, with the Federal government expanding the passport program to local Service Canada location in the Ocean Centre in Prince Rupert, providing for a local contact for passport applications and information.

The ebb and flow of the city's dining experience is putting a focus on sushi these days, we took a short look at some of the options currently available for North Coast residents and visitors.

Quadra Travel was the spotlight company for the month for Northern Savings Credit Union, which hailed the local travel agency as part of the Business of the month program.

And Prince Rupert based CityWest wrapped up its Twelve Days of Christmas  program with a Grand Prize Delivery, delivering a Smart TV and Soundbar combo to a local resident just in time for the holiday period.
