Seafest Spotlight: Take a Tour or Two

Taking in some of the sights of Prince Rupert offers up a chance for residents to become tourists for a day, as a number of the areas museums and other attractions invite you in for a visit over the weekend.

Seafest weekend of course features a nautical theme, so it's not surprising that the ocean and those that sail on it make up for a number of the displays through the festival.

Along with the locations that are open during the year, Seafest specific exhibits can be found through the weekend in the downtown area and as part of the Sunday waterfront schedule, come along and explore below:

North Pacific Cannery Historical Site -- Your journey might start with a quick trip out to Port Edward to see the latest attractions and renovations taking place at the North Pacific Cannery Historical Site.

Staff members from the site will also be participating in Saturday's Seafest Parade and operating a display downtown on Third Avenue West as part of the Seafest Saturday afternoon events.

Those stopping by their location at 3rd Avenue and 3rd Street can make an origami Salmon and play the Go Fish Card Game and Guess the Artifacts Game.

Museum of Northern British Columbia -- Friday marks an opportunity to explore the exhibits at the Museum of Northern British Columbia as the museum waives its admission fee on Friday and Saturday from 3 until 5, Children however must be accompanied by an adult as they review the displays.

CBC Studio Tour and Open House --  How do they make that morning radio program sizzle?  You can find out on Friday as the hosts of Daybreak North invite you into their Prince Rupert bureau studios for a tour of the renovated offices. Coffee will be on and donuts at the ready for those that drop in between 8AM and Noon on Friday at 222 3rd Avenue West

Her Majesty's Canadian Ship HMCS Oriole -- The Royal Canadian Navy will be in town offering tours of the 102 foot sail powered training vessel HMCS Oriole which was built in 1921.  The ship will be docked at the Cow Bay Marina.

Tours are offered from 8:30 AM to 7 PM on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

HMCS Whitehorse -- The Royal Canadian Navy also has a vessel from the Maritime Coastal Defence Squadron on the Pacific Coast, with HMCS Whitehorse docked at Cow Bay on Sunday with tours offered from 10 AM to 4 PM

Canadian Coast Guard Ship Captain Goodard MSM -- The Canadian Coast Guard ties up at the Cow Bay Marina as well this weekend with Tours of the 140 foot CCGS Captain Goodard  offered on Saturday from 1 until 4 PM.

Marine Safety exhibit from the Canadian Coast Guard -- The Coast Guard will also take part in Saturday's downtown events hosting an information booth on security and safety of Canadian waters. The information display will be available to the public from 10AM to 4 PM on Saturday you can find them in the parking lot between the DFO offices and Prince Rupert City Hall.

ReDesign Rupert -- Residents can learn more about the work of the ReDesign Rupert initiative, taking advantage of the information display to share their thoughts about their vision for the city.
The information display will be open on Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM in front of the Community Futures Office in the Capital Mall on Third Avenue West.

Ocean Science Displays -- Science and the oceans takes the spotlight with a number of information booths to be found both Saturday and Sunday as part of the Seafest celebrations.

Science Innovators -- hosted by Northwest Community College's Acuta Summer Science camp the information display offers up some hands on science for kids to participate in, it takes place from 10 AM to 4:30 PM at 3rd Avenue West and 5th Street on Saturday.

Discovering the Oceans -- The Ocean Networks Canada Learning Team sets up in the DFO parking lot on Saturday from Noon until 4 PM. Those that drop by the information display can learn more about whales and dolphins through the community observatory for ocean research. The team head for the waterfront on Sunday with a display at Rotary Waterfront Park open from Noon until 4 PM.

Whales of the North Coast -- The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Sciences Centre will also be found at the DFO parking lot on Saturday from Noon until 4 PM. They are offering an interactive experience that explores the travels of whales, dolphins and porpoises that live in the waters of the North Coast.

Fish Safe -- The Fish Safe BC program will have an information booth set up at Sunday's Waterfront events with their display available to the public from Noon to 4 PM.

BC Recyclables -- A chance to learn more about recycling initiatives in British Columbia can be found on both Saturday and Sunday as BC Recyclables hosts an information display both days.
Saturday they can be found alongside the NWCC Science camp exhibition at 3rd Avenue West and 5th Street, the display is open from 10 AM to 4PM during Saturday's downtown events.  Sunday they shift to the Rotary waterfront park from Noon to 4 PM.
