Port Edward sees end in sight for road reconstruction project; looks to engage Province on a new park for region

The May update from Port Edward Mayor Knut Bjorndal brings some welcome news for residents of the Evergreen and Wildwood area of the District, with the Mayor noting this month that the end of the road reconstruction project is on the horizon. 

That as the first major road renewal in the community in over 40 years moves into the curb and sidewalk phase of completion. 

The Mayor's update to the community also explored a pair of themes on parks in the region, the first an advisory that the clean up and upgrades planned for the Diana Lake Day Use site will not be completed until the summer, that owing to a high water level. 

Mr. Bjorndal made note of the partnership that the District has with Ridley Terminals for the project, something which we explored in December of 2020.

"Residents may recall that the District requested funding for this work and it was graciously provided by Ridley Terminals with project management from BC Parks. This is a great example of partnership that we can be proud of"

Mr. Bjorndal hopes to find more partnership in the future, making note of ongoing discussions with with the Provincial government to explore the region for locations for more campground opportunities, the Mayor observing over the low number of spots available in the region and how demand is rising for more recreation space.

"Port Edward and Prince Rupert have 24 campsites at Prudhomme Lake which is woefully under serviced considering the pent up demand for outdoor recreation and camping in our area."

The May update also features a note for local youth in the community, with the District putting word out that they plan to hire two students this summer to work in Public Works, the program which is partially funded by the Federal Government runs from May to September with maintenance of the District's green space among the duties.

Garbage is also a theme for the pre-summer update, the District taking additional measures towards their large bins behind the Municipal Office and how they are only for the use of the School, Community Centre and municipal Office. As of this month the bins have been locked and are being closely monitored, with a note that if there is continue misuse of them they will be removed.

As for the other Bear Proof bins in the community, residents are reminded that they only work if the garbage is in the bin with the lids securely closed, the District also notes that household garbage should not be placed in those bins.
