A Northwest tandem looms large for the UVic Vikings this season

Representing the Northwest with the UVic Vikings this season
are Justin McChesney and Trent Monkman

The University of Victoria Vikings are ready to tip off the 2019-2020 U Sports season and as they get closer to the launch of a new campaign, a pair of familiar names for Northwest Basketball fans will be helping chart the course to the Finals to be held in Ottawa this year.

The Vikes Roster notes include a pair of rivals from the Northwest high school scene of just a few years ago with Charles Hays Rainmaker alum Justin McChesney and Trent Monkman from the Smithers Gryphons program both among the Vikes ready for the court this month.

Monkman is a third year Guard, while McChesney also a third year player, will be looking to make his mark at Forward, his 6' 9" frame a handy weapon for the Vikes for both offensive and defensive play.

Both were part of this weekend's Ice Breaker to the basketball year, as the Vikes hosted the Guy Vetrie Memorial Tournament.

The annual event brought some of the top teams in Canadian University basketball to Victoria for some high tempo early season action. This years guests for the Vikes included the Calgary Dinos, Carleton Ravens and Regina Cougars.

A recap of the weekend play can be found here.
