Mayor Brain confirms City's RCMP commitment to short term return of AMHS vessels

Prince Rupert will provide RCMP officers for upcoming sailings to and from
Prince Rupert by the MV Malaspina

Mayor Lee Brain has posted a short update to his social media stream this afternoon offering up a few details to the recent announcement of a return to Prince Rupert for the Alaska Marine Highway System, with two sailings to arrive and depart over the course of the next two months.

We recounted much of that story yesterday afternoon and earlier today we made note of reports out of Alaska that the City of Prince Rupert has covered the cost of providing for RCMP assistance at the Terminal for the October and November Sailing.

Today's late afternoon notes from the Mayor confirm that commitment, the key elements to his review of the situation at the moment are as follows:

Given the short time frame, it was determined that the City could temporarily provide RCMP officers under our current capacity to help facilitate the time necessary to explore a long term solution, as well as to immediately resume ferry service.

The City doesn’t anticipate additional cost to local taxpayers for the two sailings. To be clear, this is a one time only arrangement in order to potentially reach a permanent solution, in the spirit of cooperation and keeping the service running.

Mr. Brain further notes that all parties continue to engage in discussions to explore further options.

  1. Why didn’t this come out with his first report on facebook. The mayor puts out half truths. When questions are asked he filsl in a little more. The mayor might be taking lessons from Donald Trump.

He is on record saying the city could not supply support for the Alaska ferry because of cost. Both statements can’t be true.

Disappointed in mayor with half truths.

  2. Not sure they are half truths as you describe, but he is certainly 'selective' as to what he chooses to share and often doesn't feel the need to provide costing, or other elements of importance towards projects he puts forward.
