5.6 magnitude quake recorded off of south tip of Haida Gwaii

A 5.6 magnitude earthquake south of Haida Gwaii
was one of a number of similar sized events
for the Northern BC/Alaska coastline today

It's been a busy day of seismic activity along the Northwest corner of the North Pacific with significant earthquakes recorded both in Alaska and off of Haida Gwaii, the latter making for a 5.1 seismic even, later upgraded to a 5.6 magnitude event,  just off the southernmost tip of the islands.

An eye catching graphic from the USGS marked it 289 kilometres south of Prince Rupert striking at just before 5PM.

Though there have been no reports of the temblor being felt in the community and no advisories or alerts were issued locally related to the event.

Nor has the seismic shift made for much in the way of attention from Haida Gwaii.

The epicentre was in the same area where a number of similar sized earthquakes have been reported in recent months in the seismically active region between Haida Gwaii and Vancouver Island.

There was no Tsunami warning generated by the Saturday event, though the magnitude of the event was increased to 5.6 in that summary.

As we noted above, the British Columbia event came following a number of seismic events in Alaska, the largest one,  that of a 6.3 magnitude event off of Rat Island in the Alaska Aleutian chain.

You can review all of the seismic activity of the day from the USGS website

More notes on past events in the Northwest is available through our archive page.
