No progress yet on Cow Bay's Rainbow Crosswalk

The move to install Rainbow crosswalks in other communities across the Northwest has gained momentum of late, with Terrace the most recent city in the region to approve the concept, taking that step at last week's Terrace City Council meeting.

Setting in motion the process of recognition of that city's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Prince Rupert passed a similar motion in early June, adopting a plan to create a Rainbow crosswalk in the Cow Bay area, with the majority of the Council members speaking in favour of the proposal, with a few concerns expressed over issues of cost, maintenance and safety.

However, since that time, to this point the splash of colours has not hit the pavement, with all of the major crosswalks of the Cow Bay District of the city still embracing the more traditional white lines.

Council did not outline any form of timeline in June when they approved the plan, leaving things a bit  unclear if the project would go ahead without funding from the community proponents of the plan.

The City did miss a summer painting window of opportunity through June and into early July with the recent hot weather, now that we've returned to the more normal weather patterns, the days of opportunity to put down some paint will for the moment seemingly be rather reduced.

Tonight's council session which includes a Council of the Whole meeting, offers the opportunity for the City to offer up a progress report when it comes to the Cow Bay crosswalk, or a chance for those in the community that are interested to ask about the timeline in place for it.

When it comes to northwest recognition, the larger centres of the community are trailing the folks on Haida Gwaii, they recently celebrated their own Rainbow Crosswalk.
