Election Act amendments, Citizenship card sessions in Prince Rupert among themes for Nisga'a Lisims Government this month

Members of the Nisga'a nation looking to get a new Nisga'a Citizenship card will have two opportunities this month to fill out the required applications and have their picture taken for the Nisga'a document.

The Nisga'a Citizenship office has scheduled two sessions for Prince Rupert set to take place on February 15th and 16th at the Nisga'a Hall.

The sessions take place as follows:

Thursday February 15: (10 AM to Noon and 1:30 to 5 PM)

Friday February 16: (10 AM to Noon and 1 to 3 PM)

You can get more information about the two day citizenship sessions through the local Gitmaxmak'ay Society located in the Nisga'a Hall building. Updates on events and services offered through that office can be reviewed from their Facebook page.

The Nisga'a Lisims Government is also giving some consideration to some changes to its Elections Act this month, having recently received a series of amendments to the Act from the Nisga'a Elections Officer.

Four amendments are to be reviewed by Nisga'a officials for possible action, they include:

Changing the nomination meeting process to a 10 day nomination period (paper process)

Adjusting the date of the regular election to avoid conflict with statutory holidays

Revert Prince George voters to District 8 list where they would receive mail in ballots

Amend Qualifications to Stand for Office so that the rules are consistent for all nominees including the sitting members of the Council of Elders

Once the amendments are considered, and if passed, the Elections Office will provide for a public education campaign to give voters more details on the amendments, as well as to offer up a broader overview of the Nisga'a Elections Act.

A review of the fourteen page report on the proposed amendments is available here.
