Curling season on hold as Curling Club membership review options on facility use

Closed until further notice! The Seal Cove Curling Rink will need an upgrade
to its ice plant system before it will be allowed t reopen

Curlers in Prince Rupert could be off the ice for a significant period of time this season, with word spreading that the Seal Cove Rink will not open this fall, with the ice making machinery remaining off until they can replace the aged ammonia ice plant.

The Details of the situation were outlined for the membership at the Curling Club's Semi-Annual General Meeting of September 26th, though rumours of the situation at the rink had already started to spread by that point.

In a message for Curling Club Members through Facebook, Natasha Lebedick provided the update on the situation, noting how new operating regulations that are in place mean that the existing plant at the Seal Cove Rink cannot be started.

Her missive also noted that the Club is looking further into the regulations and with TechSafe BC to look for a work around to operate a short season.

As for the longer vision, the Prince Rupert Curling Club is currently in the process of collecting funds along with Curl BC and the City as they look to replace the ice plant.

With curling rink portion of the facility closed until further notice, the curlers of the region will be left without the usual of number of bonspiels and events of the past that helped to build the sport on the North Coast.

The topic of the state of the Curling Rink could make for a discussion topic at Monday's City Council Session, should one of the city's councillors perhaps speaking up in support of the Club as they seek to find a solution to the ice plant issues that they face.

For updates on their work towards fundraising, grant applications and returning the rink to active use follow their Facebook page.
