Blog Watching: Week ending March 14, 2021


COVID-19 once again has made for the dominating story of the week in Prince Rupert, with the province announcing plans for a mass community vaccination clinic amid rising cases of the coronavirus.

Just how fast the virus is increasing was detailed with this weeks review of local data, with the BC CDC outlining the case reports into the first week of March that keeps Prince Rupert as the regional hot zone for the Northwest.

Other themes of note for the week,  put the focus on civic government, with a petition related to housing plans on 11th Avenue East, a proposed land sale by the City to the School District and the start of the annual civic budget process all gaining a large readership this week.

However, as it has for much of the last few months,  the surge of COVID in Prince Rupert dominated our collection of items on the week, making a number of stories that vied for the most read story of the week.

Prince Rupert COVID outbreak on the radar for Provincial Health Officials, including Doctor Bonnie Henry --  A passing comment in the Monday afternoon COVID briefing from Doctor Bonnie Henry provided a hint that Prince Rupert's COVID outbreak was about to be addressed with some extensive measures; and by the end of the week Northern Health had rolled out their plan to take appointments and to administer the COVID Vaccine community wide starting later today. Petition looks to stop progress on rezoning for 11th Avenue Housing proposal -- A proposed apartment building for an area of 11th Avenue east met a bit of resistance over last weekend with a number of respondents signing onto a petition that stated that the site proposed by the city was the wrong place for such a development. By the end of the week another online petition on change.org was making the rounds, this one in support of the location and to reinforce the need for affordable housing in the community.     (posted March 8, 2021)

Prince Rupert case count for COVID spikes to 106 with this weeks data release from BC CDC  -- The weekly review of local COVID case information this week, provided for the best background to why the province has decided that a community vaccination program is needed quickly in the city, that as Prince Rupert continued to top the Northwest case reports, a placement that the city has held for a month now, with the volume of cases growing exponentially in recent weeks.    (posted March 10, 2021)

Proposed City land sale could bring further progress for plans for new Middle School in Prince Rupert  --  A proposed land sale notice from the City provided a glimpse into what may soon be a solution to the long running quest to build a new Middle School in Prince Rupert, with a plan to build on existing land near the current school a possibility should the Ministry approve the SD52 concept. (posted March 11 , 2021)

Much praise for the civic budget, but few questions from City Councillors  -- This weeks Prince Rupert Cit Council session gave residents a first glimpse at the proposed five year plan and civic budget making, with the city's CFO Corinne Bomben announcing that once again their will be no tax increases from this years document. The Monday session brought a few themes for residents to explore, from a look at some of the city's growing list of enterprises, to an invitation for residents to balance the budget using a simulation program available on the city website.      (posted March 10, 2021)
