City of Prince Rupert gains funding for 'innovative wastewater' management system

Development of a test project towards the city's ambitious plan
for wastewater treatment can move forward with funding 
from a Federal program announced today

The City of Prince Rupert has an additional 478,000 dollars to put to use towards its plans for a wastewater management system. 

With the Federal Government and Federation of Canadian Municipalities awarding that amount in grant funding today.

Among those commenting on today's funding announcement was Prince Rupert Mayor Herb Pond, who noted of the enthusiasm of Council for the test of the new system for the community.

“The City of Prince Rupert is excited to test a new system for wastewater treatment for our community. If successful, this model will save us major capital costs, and could be an innovative approach to serve as a model form of treatment for other coastal communities. Wastewater treatment is a significant infrastructure need for Prince Rupert, and we are grateful to the FCM for this funding to support this important work.”

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities also hailed the funding for Prince Rupert today as part of their focus on Green initiatives.

A preview of what the project is all about was provided in 2022 as part of the State of City presentation at the Lester Centre. 

The test development for the new technology will be in an area of homes in the Omenica area of the city, if that proves the proposed option is feasible it would then be expanded to other areas of the community. 

In August of 2022, Operations Director Richard Pucci provided some notes toward the proposal, his report noting if successful, the wastewater plan would help to address a range of compliance issues that the city has faced with environmental legislation. 

Back in June of last year, Mr. Pucci provided an overview of how the wastewater project would work and how it would fit into the Omenica area, which is the first test for the plan.

The successful funding was noted by the City of Prince Rupert through their social media stream, no timeline towards the program was included as part of today's announcement.
