Coast Mountain College celebrates renovated campus space in Terrace

The return to classes for college Students at Coast Mountain College in Terrace was celebrated yesterday with a Grand Opening for the newly renovated academic building on campus known as Waap Sa'mn, House of Spruce.

On hand for the celebrations was Selina Robinson, the Minister of Post Secondary Education and Future Skills, who spoke to theme of community and connection that the provincial investment into the new renovated facility will bring.

“Generations of students will benefit from this newly renovated space at Coast Mountain College. This investment is about ensuring students in Northern B.C. have access to quality education, modern technologies and inclusive and accessible spaces to foster community and connection.”

The renovations included work on the library which was completed in 2021 and further work on the main and second flors of the building which have almost wrapped up, the total coast of the two phases was 13.4 million dollars, which was fully funded by the province of British Columbia.

Coast Mountain College notes how Classrooms in Waap Sa’mn are fitted out with technologies for distributed learning to make quality education more accessible across a large geographic region and improve the student experience. Computer, nursing, and science labs have all received technology upgrades to better prepare students for the next steps in their careers. 

The new look Laos include social spaces for student gatherings and improved energy efficiency, seismic enhancements and fire safety designs.

Dr. Laurie Waye, College President and CEO. observed how the renovates space will add to the college experience for students and staff.

“These renovated learning spaces will support and inspire students and faculty. We are very excited to have such high-quality labs, classrooms, and student spaces to enhance the education we offer to our region both at our campuses and through distributed learning and Contact North BC centres.”

Next week, Coast Mountain College officials will be turning some of their attention to the Prince Rupert Campus, that as they host a Strategic Planning Community Engagement Session in Prince Rupert.

That takes place Wednesday, September 20th from 10 AM to Noon in the multipurpose room of the Prince Rupert campus.
