Blog Watching: Week ending December 3, 2023

Prince Rupert City Council put the wrap on their Budget planning for 2024 this week, the Monday Council session providing for some extensive conversation and movement forward fo the Financial plan and a potential 7.7 per cent tax increase next spring.

As such, not surprisingly the majority of our five top stories for the week have a budget theme to theme, among them notes on the commentary from the Council membership towards the budget.

Also of note from those conversations and of interest to readers was the latest go round when it comes the long closed 4th West Walkway and how Council and staff make use of the Legacy Fund.

Our notes on some law enforcement related to weapons by the Prince Rupert RCMP also found a large readership this week.

The top story of the five on the week however, comes from Council's Monday session and the pace of progress for the demolition of all but one wall of the ole Rose's location by Friday.

Progress seemingly on the horizon for full demolition of Third Avenue West's Rose's Debris --    The first indication that something was up, or in this case coming down on Third AvenueWest  came out of Monday's Council session, with an update from Corporate Administration Rosa Miller on the schedule for demolition of Rose's.  The week ended with all but one wall left to the site to mark the former structure following the removal of the long lasting rubble. Familiar commentaries from veteran Councillors shape the narrative  for 2024 Budget approval -- With five of six councillors veterans of the civic budget process over the last number of years, the conversation towards the 2024 financial plan echoed many themes of the past.   (posted November 29 2023)

Fourth Avenue Walkway spurs Budget conversation/defers any decisions until 2024 -- The long closed Walkway between the Fourth West area and downtown made for much of the conversation for Council member at the Budget approval sessions, the topic one that will likely make a return in the year ahead both for residents and those they vote to represent them. The interest was such that the preview of the theme for the session, noting the commentary for the public during the budget consultation found a large audience as well.   (posted November 30, 2023

The Budget Logistics of the city's financial instrument of Legacy  --  Along with the 4th Avenue Walkway issues, the other topic that dominated much of Monday night's Budget conversation was how the city makes use of money from Legacy, a topic that brought a few of the councillors into the conversation.  (posted December 1 , 2023

Social Media posting leads Prince Rupert RCMP to make arrests, seize weapons -- Some posts to the social media streams of Facebook caught the eye of a few members of the Prince Rupert RCMP detachment, the video review taking Mounties to two locations on in Prince Rupert the other in Lax Kw'alaams making arrests and seizing weapons, with charges being considered by the BC Prosecution Service.     (posted November 28, 2023
