The hard work and remarkable run for the Gidgalang Kuyaas Naay Breakers at the Provincial Basketball tournament last week in Langley gained a tribute from North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice on Wednesday at the BC Legislature.

As we outlined on Monday, the Breakers had a remarkable run at the 1A Provincial High School Basketball tournament, knocking off a number of top ranked teams on their way to the Saturday final, a contest that they came close to winning.

With just three points the difference in the 74-71 final score between the Haida Gwaii school and that of the tournament champs from Surrey.

During the Wednesday statements period in the Chamber. Ms. Rice noted of their success in the tournament in reaching the finals,

Now, students from all backgrounds came together and showed us that with hard work and cooperation, achieving big things is possible. But it was not only the way they played basketball that caught the eye of the rest of the province. It's the way they carried themselves as representatives of our region, how they demonstrated true passion, leadership, and the love of their teammates and community.

How they sang the national anthem of the Haida Nation and shared a small piece of what it means to be from Haida Gwaii. A truly inspiring journey that will pave the way for future teams, not only from Haida Gwaii, but from rural communities across the province.

Haida Gwaii has long punched above its weight in so many ways, and basketball is no exception to that rule. And thanks to the sage advice of coach Desi Collinson, himself a decorated basketball for the Skidegate Saints, and countless other coaches, volunteers, parents, and teachers.

It really should come as no surprise how far the Breakers made it in the tournament. They also took best offensive player of the game, player of the game and two first round all-stars for the single-A basketball championship.
