Metlakatla prepares to head towards elections in August
The first steps towards casting votes in the Metlakatla First Nation election this August will get underway next month, when a Nomination meeting takes place in the main office building at Metlakatla Village.
The June 13th nomination session will take place from Noon until 4PM at the main office.
To be considered for nomination those seeking office must reside within the traditional territory of the Metlakatla First Nation and be present at the nomination meeting to accept their nomination verbally.
Those that cannot attend the June 13th session can provide written authorization to the nominator to allow their name to stand or prior to the close of the Nomination meeting have provide written and signed authorization to the Chief Electoral Officer to let their name stand.
Any voter may put forward a maximum of three nominations in writing prior to the start of the Nomination meeting by using the form provided by the Metlakatla Electoral Officer prior to the start of the June 13th meeting.
Candidates who stand in nomination must provide a non-refundable $100 deposit within 48 hours of the nomination meeting.
Metlaktalta voters will head to the polls on Wednesday August 28th from 9AM to 8 PM with two voting locations available to cast a ballot, the main office in Metlakatla Village or a second polling location for those in the Prince Rupert area to be hosted by the Coastal Training Centre on Dunsmuir Street.
Members of the First Nation will be electing one Chief and Six Councillors in August, with those successful at the ballot box to serve a term of four years in office.
