Transmission circuit failure takes Northwest BC off the grid for near one hour Saturday afternoon

The hum of electricity across Northwestern British Columbia was replaced by silence for close to one hour on Saturday afternoon, that after what BC Hydro has described as a transmission circuit failure took communities from Vanderhoof to Prince Rupert off the BC Hydro main grid.

The incident which began at 4:19 PM saw community after community entered into the BC Hydro transmission map with a red point, at one point noting some 45,000 plus customers without power at the height of the outage.

Something which no doubt sending many across the Northwest to test out their barbecues for the first time this spring, as the outage continued through the dinner hour.

Power began to return across the region at 5:15.

As a result of the Saturday power outage, the City of Prince Rupert has noted through their mobile app that the Recreation Centre will remain closed for the remainder of Saturday and reopen again on Sunday.
