Anticipated Winds of up 110 kilometres, part of WIND WARNING Thursday Night, brings Sailing Cancellation for BC Ferries Prince Rupert-Haida Gwaii route

Some strong winds are crossing Hecate Strait on
their way to Prince Rupert this evening

Environment Canada has issued a WIND WARNING for the North Coast, Central Coast and Haida Gwaii as a low pressure system makes its way to the Islands before crossing Hecate Strait for Prince Rupert and area.

With the approach of the marine system winds will increase tonight to up to 110 km/h, easing into Friday morning as the weather system moves into the Southeast Alaska region.

The Central Coast will see a second system work its way north from Vancouver Island into Friday afternoon.

The Marine Forecast calls for Hurricane Force winds  up to 65 knots through the evening for Hecate Strait, with seas building to 9 metres before subsiding after midnight.

More on the forecasts for both land and sea can be explored here.

As a result of the approaching weather, BC Ferries cancelled today's sailing of the Northern Expedition, advising passengers earlier today of the cancellation between Prince Rupert and Haida Gwaii.
