Council calendar in 2023 features 20 Council sessions, three conventions of note

As they begin to wind down the work of 2022, City Staff has already put together the calendar for the year ahead, providing Mayor Herb Pond and the Council Six with a guideline as to how their year ahead looks.

Towards their Public Regular Council Sessions, there once again will be 20 Council meetings on the calendar, the first six months featuring twice a month sessions, the first of which comes up on January 9th.

Council members start their summer sessions with just one each in July, August and September, returning to the twice a month schedule in October and November.

As it is this year, they will have only one Regular Public Session on the schedule to wrap up 2023, that one on December 11th before the annual Christmas and New Year's break.

and conventions from the City of PR

City Council members and Senior staff, have three convention periods of note on the 2023 Calendar.

The First comes up in May when the North Central Local Government Association hosts its annual convention from May 9-12, the 2023 edition set for Dawson Creek in the Peace Country.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities Convention is set for May 25-28 in Toronto.

While the annual UBCM convention comes up in September, that event from September 18-22 takes place in Vancouver.

Prince Rupert has in the past sent a varying amount of delegates to each of the events above, the one of the three above that usually brings the most attendance from city council members and senior staff is the UBCM convention.

Updates on past attendance at events has been a somewhat hit and miss approach, with snapshots noted from time to time, but it's been rare that a full overview of the work at convention is provided.

As they prepare for their work ahead in 2023, City Staff is currently steering some proposed changes to the Council Procedures bylaw through the civic process, you can find out more about those changes and how to have your voice heard on them here.

The deadline for comment is January 6th, 2023.

You can access more information on what is planned for each City Council session in 2023 through the City's Agenda archive page.
