A playground improvement project has been completed at Pineridge School that has seen new equipment installed at the school site, with a number of members of Prince Rupert's corporate community coming together to lend a hand.

The Project which was sponsored by the Pineridge Elementary School Parent Advisory Council and the Port of Prince Rupert, also included the involvement of Ridley Terminals, DP World, Prince Rupert Grain, Pinnacle Renewable Energy and School District 52.

The Pineridge Accessible Playground Project is an interactive space that includes a number of features for people with mobility issues and is also to be used by the Strong Start Program, Daycare programs and the youth from around the Pineridge neighbourhood.

The Port of Prince Rupert invested $37,500 in matching funds from its Community Investment Fund, matching that of the Pineridge PAC to help see the Accessible Playground Project meet its goal, making for the 66th Community project that the fund has provided support towards.

Krista Ediger, the Port's Community Relations Associate outlined some of the focus that the Port puts towards youth initiatives as part of their Community Fund.

“Youth and accessibility are such good fits for Port’s Community Investment Fund,”  ...“Creating play space for everyone in the community is so important. Doing it in a way that ensures every child has the opportunity to engage in recreation and mix with other children makes this even more special.”

The new equipment has already been put to good use and Pineridge PAC member Julie Slocombe
issued an invitation for the community come and check out the fun.

“We set a goal to enhance our school’s playground by adding new equipment that would encourage cooperative play and allow children with varied physical abilities to play together. The chosen equipment is really being enjoyed by all the children at Pineridge and the local community. If you haven’t had a chance yet, stop by for a swing or a spin!”

The new playground was featured as part of the School District 52 newsletter of September 19
