Blog Watching: Week ending November 11, 2018



Port development loomed large this week with a pair of announcements that caught the attention of the public.

The first saw Prince Rupert's Ridley Terminals put up for sale, with the government holding ten percent of the company back to be distributed to both the Metlakatla First Nation and the Lax Kw'alaams Band.

The Port of Prince Rupert was also the focus for the community this week, as plans to move forward with a connector road between Fairview Terminal and Ridley Island, along with a pair of other infrastructure plans received a financial boost from the Federal government.

The closure of Highway 16 owing to a rock slide last Sunday resonated large with the audience, as did our look at a new Environmental Assessment process, the introduction of which found
Skeena NDP Ellis Ross recounting a number of his concerns that he has about how the proposed legislation.

However the top story of the week generating the most interest was found from the announcement to seek out a purchaser for Ridley Terminals, along with the planned shift of ownership of ten percent of the Terminal to local Indigenous governments in the region.

Metlakatla, Lax Kw'alaams to retain 10 percent stake ... as Ridley Terminals goes up or Sale   -- One of Prince Rupert's signature industrial employers is up for sale, as the Federal government puts Ridley Terminals onto the sales listings, with plans to transfer 10 percent of the ownership to Metlaktla and Lax Kw'alaams. This week's announcement caught the eye of NDP MP Nathan Cullen, who explored the issue a few times this week. (see here and here).    (posted November  5, 2018)

Highway 16 CLOSED due to rock slide west of Terrace -- The hazardous winter road season got off to an early start this year, with a rock slide west of Terrace shutting down Highway 16 for a number of hours this week and delivering a close call for one Prince Rupert resident. The road remained limited to one lane through the week as work crews attended to the situation.   (posted November 4 , 2018)

Ellis Ross calls for more clarity on EA process than what NDP government has put forward  --  With the NDP government introducing new Environmental Assessment legislation (see here) the Liberal MLA for Skeena, Ellis Ross outlined some of his concerns over the new approach.   (posted November  6, 2018)

Federal Government to invest close to 22 million dollars on Port infrastructure and new access route to  Fairview -- Terry Beech, the parliamentary secretary to the Transportation Minister  was in town this week, spreading some federal money towards a number of infrastructure projects for the Port of Prince Rupert, including some funding for the much anticipated Fairview Connector road to Ridley Island.  (posted November  7, 2018)

City changes application notes on Council remuneration Committee -- The City of Prince Rupert has offered up a bit more information and a new contact name for those residents interested in serving on a committee set to review and offer up recommendations related to salaries for the Mayor and City Council members.     (posted November  9, 2018)
