It's been delayed for close to six months, but at long last, the Recycling Transfer Station at the Kaien Road Recycling Centre will be Open to the public this weekend.
The Grand Opening of the new transfer facility will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, with a ceremony that will launch around the clock access to Recycling options for the residents of the region.
The hope for many on City Council being that with that access, the amount of items that currently find their way into the landfill site on Ridley Island road will be reduced.
The Transfer Station, at a cost of nearly 135,000 dollars has been on the wish list of both the Regional District and the City for a few years now. However the path to easier recycling options suffered a number of delays along the way, making it a frequent topic of discussion at Prince Rupert Council over the last year or so.
Prospects for the anticipated opening for the Transfer Station received a boost last year, when the Prince Rupert Port Authority designated that 18,000 dollars from their Community Fund to be directed to the goal of better recycling opportunities in the region.
With the project now in the home stretch, residents will soon find large bins available for dropping off their fiber, plastic, metal and Styrofoam materials in a safe and secure environment.
With the arrival of Saturday's Grand Opening, all of the stakeholders in the project can finally take the Transfer Station off the sill under development list and residents can take advantage of the extended hours available to fit their schedule.
Background on the facility can be found from this media release from the Skeena - Queen Charlotte Regional District.
