City West mailing outlines just how all that technology makes its way to your home

Those of us who just sit down in front of the television and computer and look for our favourite programming or online content probably don't give much thought as to how it all arrives at our homes, but if inclined, CityWest has provided for a handy tutorial in the "core network" and how it works and how it will soon expand.

The information comes by way of a late April mailing to homes, where the Prince Rupert based communication company outlines how the signals to our homes come along a massive fibre optic network that runs from Prince Rupert to Prince George and loops through British Columbia and Alberta to larger hubs in Calgary, Vancouver and even Seattle.

The article called Expanding the Core Network  notes how the footprint of the network core is much larger than just the CityWest service area that runs from the Bulkley Valley to the North Coast.

As Donovan Dias, CityWests Vice President of Sales and Project management explains it in the mailing, the fibre optic infrastructure that is in place allows for improved products and services for customers as well as to allow CityWest to leverage and negotiate better pricing on bandwidth.

The Core Network in place now, will soon be complimented by the next phase of the CityWest expansion plans as they move forward with the 45 million dollar partnership with the Strathcona Regional District on Vancouver Island to create the Connected Coast project, an undersea fibre optic network that will link up underserved communities along the coast and Vancouver Island.

That project is expected to be completed within the next five years.

For those that many not have the mailing around the house anymore, you can review the CityWest Notes below:
