Rescue Centre dispatches units for plane crash north of Smithers

A from the Victoria Joint Rescue Coordination Centre has outlined the tasking of air assets to respond to a report of a plane crash in the Northwest, listed as 50 miles north of Smithers landing.

The JRCC received the emergency locator beacon notification from a Cessna 182  at 845 AM his morning and immediately dispatched a Cormorant Search and Rescue Helicopter, along with a fixed wing Buffalo aircraft with both flying out of 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron at Comox BC.

Joining in on the search has been a helicopter out of Canadian Helicopters in Smithers.

The Buffalo aircraft is currently searching the area of the beacon, with the Cormorant expected to be on station within the hour.

Update as of 3PM:



The most recent update from the RCMP confirmed that there were three fatalities from the crash, with one person also taken to hospital with unspecified injuries.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has also been dispatched to start an investigation into the incident
