The financial challenges of the Airport Ferry and the city's hopes for the Airport made for a short overview as part of the State of the City, part of it's Revenue Challenges segment
The larger financial limitations that the City faces for all of its infrastructure was reviewed as part of our Overview of the mayor's presentation.
Mayor Brain's overview made for a short synopsis of the ferry's history as a municipally run transportation service and how the money required to run it adds to the city's financial challenges, as well as potential solution towards that financial drain.
"So right we now we have an airport ferry, we're the only municipality in the country that runs a ferry to an airport, costing us 1.5 million dollars a year and the City is now looking right now to divest themselves from this service.
And when I say divest ourselves, I mean transferring it to a different operator I'm not saying cancelling the Ferry and getting rid of the ferry.
I'm talking about we shouldn't be in the business of running the ferry and we have some very positive traction right now and we potentially will be able to get that done, which will free up 1.5 million a year in our budget.
The potential for selling off of the Airport Ferry was outlined as part of the larger process of reaching the city's target of 20 million dollars a year for other infrastructure needs. The Mayor noting how the city has other plans as well towards the airport itself.
"We have an airport that is a stranded asset we all know that and what you'll see in the 2030 vision is a new coordination we're going to do for the Airport Ferry to open up access to the airport.
And hopefully long term create the airport into a better environment for our residents, and for tourism and for economic development"
The Conversation on the airport transportation element of the presentation can be viewed from the City's Video replay of the Sate of the City Presentation.
The review of the roads notes start at the 56 minute mark

"we shouldn't be in the business of running the ferry"
ReplyDeleteWe shouldn't be in the business of telecom or property development either.
After eight years, this city is still a patient on the table, and it will take a bag of cash to save it. So time for drastic measures, divest yourself of the time and capital it takes to operate ventures like the ferry, citywest, and legacy.
Be bold, and be faster.
