Prince Rupert Vigil set for Noon hour in remembrance of the victims of the Montreal Massacre

Thirty years ago today, fourteen lives, all of them the lives of women attending classes or working at Montreal's École Polytechnique, were cut short by a day of violence that forever framed the way Canadians have viewed how our society has changed.

The horrific murders in Quebec making the issue of violence against women one that remains one of constant vigilance to this day.

Today at Noon the North Coast Transition Society is hosting a vigil, to mark this day that those fourteen women were murdered by a gunman.

Someone steeped with a hatred for feminism who embarked on one of the most horrendous incidents of mass killings in Canadian history.

Fourteen others on the day of violence, ten women and four men were also injured in the attack at the Montreal campus.

The date of December 6th, 1989 one that is now etched in the memories of Canadians and has since proclaimed a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

The Prince Rupert observance will take place at the Coast Mountain College Multipurpose Room from Noon to 1 PM, all are welcome to attend and share in this time of reflection and thought.

As well the hour will serve as a way to dedicate  time to remember and to continue to push politicians and society at large to take action to eliminate violence against all women.

the mass murders at Ecole Polytechnique thirty years ago

The day was commemorated earlier today in the House of Commons, as MP's stood for a moment of silence to reflect on the events of thirty years ago.

Similar observance have taken place across Canada through the day including at Ecole Polytechnique, where a number of events of remembrance have been planned.

For notes on how the day was commemorated in other areas of Canada see our political portal D'Arcy McGee.
