Northwest gains mixed results from resolution process at UBCM

Of the many activities of UBCM Convention week, the period of the week long festival that is allocated to resolutions makes for some of the larger talking points for delegates as they hear the concerns of member communities towards issues of note back home.

As we noted last week, Prince Rupert's delegates to UBCM found success with a city initiative towards housing themes.

The City's resolution which we previewed in August had Prince Rupert delegates looking to encourage Safe and Affordable housing by way of creating a tax exemption for all income derived from the rental of secondary suites.

The original City of Prince Rupert motion, saw the wording changes slightly prior to being endorsed as amended  part of a block of resolutions under consideration

It now proceeds further in the process for provincial review and response.

Of the remainder of the Northwest communities, the most active on presentations of Resolutions at UBCM was Daajing Giids (formerly Queen Charlotte City) which had  five resolutions for consideration many of them focus on BC Ferries and Ambulance service in the region.

Terrace shared its concerns over prolific offenders, while Smithers wanted more money for public libraries, for Kitimat the themes were health care and the need for more cultural awareness training for local governments.

In total the Northwest presented 20 topics for discussion for the 2022 edition of UBCM.
