The community of Metlakatla is set to celebrate the re-opening of one of their most ambitious projects in recent years. With members of Metlakatla First Nation invited to attend ceremonies towards its return for members to access.
The event is set for this Thursday at Noon with a Community BBQ and ceremony to take place at the Metlakatla Community Hall.
Metlakatla officials have made provisions for a charter boat to leave Prince Rupert on Thursday, though space is limited for those members looking to make the crossing for the ceremony.
The Wilderness Trail has been closed since 2015 when it was severely damaged by a storm, with the community leadership working on grant funding and other challenges to get the remediation project to the finish line.
There have not been a lot of mentions towards the work in recent months, and the pace of the project did seem to face a few delays during the course of the last few years of COVID, pushing back the completion date.
Some of our past notes on the tale of the Trail can be reviewed from below:
August 2019 -- NDIT approves Grant Funding for Metlakatkla Trail remediation
July 2019 -- Work underway on Metlakatla Wilderness Trail
June 2019 -- Metlakatla to seek grant funding for Trail repairs
May 2019 -- Metlakatla Wilderness Trail to remain closed for 2019
May 2016 -- Popular North Coast trail closed for the season
Updates on the event will be shared through the Metlakatla First Nation social media page.
