Mayor Brain speaks out regarding assault in downtown area

Prince Rupert Mayor Lee Brain is calling on those responsible for a vicious beating of a Prince Rupert man last week to come forward and do the right thing,  describing the assault as atrocious and unacceptable the Mayor has also asked that if anyone knows anything about the incident to contact the RCMP.

Mr. Brain posted his thoughts to his Social media stream on Monday, a commentary which included a link to this Northern View story which chronicled the attack, as well as a campaign currently underway to lend assistance to the family of 27 year old Kenneth Haldane who is currently in Prince George for medical treatment to his facial area following the assault.

According to Prince Rupert RCMP, Mr. Haldane was assaulted by four men in the early morning hours of November 27th, the incident taking place sometime between three and five in the morning in the area of Second Avenue West and Seventh Street.

Mr. Haldane could not identity those who assaulted him and the RCMP could not locate the four suspects in their follow up investigation.

The local detachment is asking that anyone who may have information related to the incident to contact the local RCMP at 250-627-0700.

Seventh Street and Second Avenue was the scene of a vicious assault
in the downtown area of Prince Rupert last Tuesday morning

Reading some of the comments from the Northern View story, as well as others through Social media, the occurrence of such assaults, though less violent at times, does not seem to be an uncommon occurrence of late.

With a number of those weighing in expressing some concern over the situation in the downtown area and what they see as a growing level of such violence in the city core.

That may be something that the City Council may wish to bring the head of the detachment to Council Chambers to share some thoughts on, providing a public update on the nature of RCMP's policing plan in the downtown area and what efforts are in place to address the concerns.

The next City Council session and the only one for December takes place on Monday.
