Blog Watching: Week ending August 6, 2017

While the North Coast continues to reflect on the recent decision by Petronas to bring an end to their plans for an LNG terminal on Lelu Island, other industrial plans continue to move along and two announcements from AltaGas related to their Ridley Island export terminal found wide audiences, topping our list of five for the week.

Also catching the attention of readers this week a pair of personnel moves in the region, with the departures of both Michael Gurney of the Port and Willa Thorpe at the City of Prince Rupert both generating large volumes of readership over the last seven days.

Municipal politics also proved popular again this week, with readers showing a fair bit of interest in a pair of our items related to the efforts of City Council to pass an amendment to the 2017 Financial Plan and set in motion expropriation plans at Watson Island.

And our account of the work of Northwest RCMP and DFO officers also proved to be a popular read, as we outlined the background to a recent operation that took 17 pounds of marijuana out of circulation.

The top story of the week however highlights some positive economic news for the region, as Alberta based AltaGas's liquid propane export terminal at Ridley Island begins to take shape.

AltaGas shares project update through newsletter presentation  -- While much of the discussion over the last week remained focused on the July 25 cancellation of the Pacific NorthWest LNG project in Port Edward, one major investment continues forward momentum. In addition to the work on the terminal, securing shipment deals has also been an active area, with AltaGas signing an export contract with a Japanese company this past week.  (posted August 1, 2017)
