RCMP update on Sloan Avenue fire confirms the tragic loss of life from Monday afternoon

One fatality has been confirmed from Monday's fire on Sloan Avenue

There was some sad news to relay this afternoon for the Prince Rupert detachment of the RCMP as Sergeant Jagdev Uppal, the detachment's Media Relations officer, confirmed that there had been one fatality related to the fire on Sloan Avenue of Monday afternoon.

The RCMP account provides some additional background to the work of the Prince Rupert Fire Department and RCMP members that were on the scene for much of Monday afternoon and into the early evening, with Sergeant Uppal also making note of the impact that such a tragedy has on the community.

Upon police arrival the left hand portion of the residence was fully engulfed in flames. As firefighters entered the residence they located a deceased female who was removed from the scene and transported to the hospital. The female was a 77 year old Prince Rupert resident. The firefighters continued to fight the fire well into the afternoon.

As part of the follow up investigation into Monday's fire, members of the Prince Rupert Fire Department and RCMP, along with the North Coast forensic unit attended the residence through the day today to attempt to determine a cause of the incident.

From their initial work they have concluded that Foul Play is not suspected, the RCMP will continue to work on the investigation along with the BC Coroner Service.
