Rainmakers hit the floor running in weekend play

The start of the 2019-20 BC High School basketball season in the Northwest found the Senior Boy's teams of the region gathering in Terrace for two days of play to test their skills and learn where work is required moving on into the year.

The teams were in the Skeena Valley for the Caledonia Kermodes hosted the Kermode Classic, with the Charles Hays Rainmakers taking to the court three times in weekend play, making for a sweep of their challengers through the weekend.

The first matchup came on Friday night with a prime time showdown with long standing rival Caledonia with the Rainmakers topping the Kermodes 93-64.

Saturday had the team on the court for two contests, the First a 95 to 38 victory over Smithers, followed by a time shortened game with Hazelton which came to an end at 61-10 after the Hazelton team suspended its play owing to illness and lack of player availability.

The weekend action served as a tune up for what's ahead for the Rainmakers as they make the first of their two trips south for their regular season, with the Makers' off for the annual Quinn Keast Foundation No Regrets tourney in North Vancouver.

The Charles Hays Senior Boys hit the court Thursday afternoon at 3:45 with a match up against Mount Boucherie, the rest of their weekend schedule will be dependent on the outcome of that tourney icebreaker.

Play will continue on Friday and Saturday with the Tournament Final set for 7:30 Saturday night at the Collingwood Secondary Gymnasium.

The Rainmakers will be looking to make a return appearance in the tournament final, last year the Senior Boys navigated the three days of tourney play to book a place in the final against Handsworth, with the latter claiming victory over the Makers 69-50.

The tournament is one which has seen a number of former Rainmakers put their name into the records book, with some familiar names marking a number entries from past events.
