Range of change for Coast Tsimshian Academy as new school year moves into fall

Students, staff and the families of Lax Kw'alaams have seen a number of changes come to the Community School of the Coast Tsimshian Academy, with much of the path ahead for 2021-22 recently outlined through the Annual Report from the Lax Kw'alaams Band Council.

As we noted in our review of the report last week, among the changes is the arrival of a new Principal for the Schoo, with Brad Pilgrim taking on his new duties at the start of this month, Mr. Pilgrim hails from Newfoundland and Labrador and introduced himself through the Annual Report entry.

The K-10  School which has an enrolment of approximately 120 students has also seen some changes in staffing with four new additions arriving to the CTA teaching staff for 2021-22.

Among the new arrivals of sorts (two are former CTA graduates) include Ms Bev Fairful who is serving in areas of Learning Support and Education. Ms. Lesley-Anne Jackson where she will be supporting student wellness and academic achievement.

Ms. Hailey Wesley and Ms. Marcy Dudoward are the two CTA grads and they will be joining the staff in areas of language and culture. The bring with them extensive studies since January 2019 in the Linguistics and Sm’algyax programs at the University of Northern British Columbia.

This year also marks a change in designation for the school with CTA now operating as Band School, a shift from its previous designation as an Independent School, with the change in designation the Coast Tsimshian Academy now operates under the guidance and mandate of the First Nations Schools Association.

Some of the education themes are explored from the Annual Report document here
