Canadian College Soccer Championship on the line this week for former Rainmaker/Whitecap Academy member David Armstrong

The Canadian College Soccer season in Canada wraps up this week at Calgary's Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and as the St. Thomas Tommies hit the field through the week, there will be a name familiar to many in Prince Rupert as Winger David Armstrong takes to the pitch.

In his first year with the Tommies,  Armstrong put six points on three goals on the board in eleven games played as part of the 2021 season for the Fredericton, New Brunswick based squad.

It was a remarkable run for the Tommies on the east coast, finishing the regular season at the top of the men’s soccer division of the Atlantic Collegiate Athletics Association with a record of no losses and two tied games.

The 2021 Canadian Championship got underway this morning, with play to continue through Championship Saturday at the Cohos Commons Field at the SAIT campus.

The Tommies first game was a 4-0 victory over the host SAIT Trojans, you can review the webcast of that game here.

They next play on Thursday evening with an opponent still to be determined, you can follow the tournament and view the ongoing webcast of the competition through Tournament Schedule page here.

Mr. Armstrong graduated from Charles Hays Secondary in 2020 and is in his second year of undergraduate studies at St. Thomas University, where he was recruited to the varsity soccer team.

He honed some of his soccer skills on the North Coast through the Charles Hays Rainmakers, as well as the Whitecaps Academy program in the Northwest, gaining experience through his travels through the region and beyond.

He also distinguished himself locally through the Charles Hays Debate Club and with the Toastmasters Society in the city.

For the moment all his talking and debating will be on the pitch, with the next chapter of his athletics career now set for display on the big stage of the national championship in Calgary.

Our thanks to Michael Gurney for the heads up on the career arc for Mr. Armstrong, if you know of a local athlete off on a new adventure, share the word with us at Northcoastreviewpr@yahoo.ca
