Infrastructure on the roads, under the roads and in the world of communication all featured into the most read news themes for the week just ended.
The City of Prince Rupert will be looking over the proposals received for their 2022 Summer Paving program, that as the Bid process recently came to an end and the decision now ahead as to who gets the contract for this summer's paving plans.
Underneath some of that pavement some more troubles bubbled to the surface as McBride Street became a major construction area, with a broken watermain near 4th Avenue East, the start of the work came on Tuesday, though the scope of it now appears to have extended all the way down to the intersection with Third Avenue.
And those who rely on the Internet found themselves with close to 10 hours of time on their hands on Tuesday, as the communication backbone for the Northwest came to a halt after a Beaver took out a stretch of the connectivity near Houston.
SD 52 was in the news this week for their final deliberations on their 2022 Budget program, the Board making the 800,000 dollars in cuts required to reach balance for this year.
However, when it came to the top item of the week, it was Shipping which tops the list, with the arrival of an unusual looking vessel with cargo from a port in China staging in Prince Rupert Harbour as it awaits its next transit.
Special Cargo Vessel Forte holds post off Rushbrook Floats -- A most unusual and large special cargo vessel spent all of the last week at an anchorage just off of Rushbrook Floats, with the Port later noting that the Vessel Forte, was staging in Prince Rupert in preparation for a delivery to LNG Canada in Kitimat next week. Watermain break reduces travel lanes for McBride Street -- One of the city's most important arterial roads sprung a leak in the overnight period of June 6th and by Tuesday morning the City was already digging up the asphalt to determine the extent of the waterman issues. By weeks end as we noted on Friday, that dig had extended all the way to Third Avenue, giving us cause to take a bit back in time on past McBride Street infrastructure work. ( posted June 7, 2022)
SD52 balances budget with near 800 thousand dollar mix of program, supplies and staffing cuts ahead -- It took them into the month of June to make their final decisions, and in a June 2nd Special session, the Board of Education at SD52 made their final decisions on where to make the cuts required to reach balance for their 2022 Budget document. Back to the Pre-dial up days for Prince Rupert Internet users on Tuesday -- A massive North-west wide communications outage left residents from Prince George to Prince Rupert without the use of Internet and in some cases cel phone service for much of Tuesday. Later in the week, the lengthy interruption was attributed to the work of a Beaver near Houston which began the day of internet darkness with the felling of a tree. ( posted June 7, 2022)
