The Special Cargo Ship Forte has been a conversation piece in Prince Rupert Harbour since June 4th |
Port watchers in the Rushbrook Floats area of the waterfront can't help but notice a fairly large presence just off the Dock area, with the Special Cargo Vessel Forte holding its spot at anchorage number four.
According to the Prince Rupert Port authority vessel movements page, the unusual looking ship arrived at Prince Rupert Harbour on June 5th and will depart its waters on June 12th. The PRPA page does note that the vessel currently does not have any cargo aboard.
The Martine Traffic Tracking website, observes that the Forte arrived in Prince Rupert following at 20 and a half day journey from Qingdao, China.
Built in 2012, it's home port is listed as Valetta, Malta.
The vessel measures 216.7 metres long and 43 metres wide.
The unusual look of the Forte stands out in Prince Rupert Harbour whether at Rushbrook Floats or as from above from the CowBay area of the city |
The last large cargo vessel of similar scope anchored in a similar location was part of a transit of materials earlier this year for the BC Hydro Site C project in the Peace region of the province.
Should we gain any further notes on the purpose for the Forte's transit to Prince Rupert we'll update our story.
Update: The Prince Rupert Port Authority has solved the mystery of the Forte and its cargo!
The heavy lift vessel Forte is currently anchored in the inner harbour for provisioning, and a crew change. The vessel is bound for Kitimat, and it’s estimated that it will depart this weekend. -- Katherine Voigt, Manager of Corporate Communications for Prince Rupert Port AuthorityMore items of interest on Prince Rupert Port Authority themes can be explored here.
