Metlakatla Trail Now Closed for the season

After spending a summer as one of the North Coast's Destination spots for Metlakatla members, Prince Rupert and area residents along with visitors to the region, the popular Metlakatla Trail has been closed for the Season.

The Metlakatla First Nation announcing the closure on Tuesday, sharing word of the seasonal shutdown through their social media stream.

The trail reopened to the public on May 25th, the wilderness experience having undergone some significant remediation work since it was close in 2015 that due to a major windstorm that roared through the region in the spring of that year.

The re-opening for the trail was an event that was welcomed by Metlakatla residents, those across the harbour in Prince Rupert and Port Edward as well as for the large volume of visitors that come to town and had hoped to explore the trip into nature.

To celebrate the re-opening, Metlakatla offered a twice weekly charter service to and from the community, a project that was well received through the summer.

We recounted some of the history of the trail and the work to rebuild it earlier this spring, which you can review from this piece from the time of the reopening.
