Slubowski and Broncos spend weekend with tough test in Denver

Prince Rupert's Frank Slubowski had a heavy workload this weekend, as he and his University of Western Michigan Bronco's faced one of their sternest tests of the young NCAA hockey season.

The Bronco's who last week had a pair of non conference games with Northern Michigan,  (reviews here and here), were in the hockey hotbed of Denver, where they faced off against the always strong and until Saturday night, undefeated Denver University Pioneers.

Friday night's game provided for quick burst of offensive for the Broncos who jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after one period of play, however the Pioneers battled back with a fury in the second scoring four unanswered goals.

Western Michigan battled back in the third to bring the game to within one goal, however Denver put the opening match of the two game series away with one final goal to make the final score 5-3 Pioneers.

The PRMHA grad faced 29 shots on the night, the second period troubles making for a bump in the goals against totals for the year.

The Statistical review of Friday night's game, the Bronco's first conference loss of the year can be found here.

Saturday, the Bronco's were looking for a bit of push back against the Pioneers and provided for a spirited game number two of the weekend. However, the Denver squad once again found the right scoring touch at the right time, securing a 1-0 victory and taking the two game series 2 games to 0.

Prince Rupert's Frank Slubowski was given the night off, following Friday night's scoring festival by the Pioneers.

With the loss the Broncos fall a bit back in the NCHC rankings, they will look to improve their record next weekend when they have a Saturday night match up with cross state rival Michigan State.
