Renewable Rupert the next focus for city's Mayor

As we were all reminded during the course of Mayor Lee Brain's Hays 2.0 update of April there are no shortage of issues for the City of Prince Rupert to solve in the immediate short term.

With a number civic concerns ahead that will require some strong attention and focus for those that may form the next municipal government following the October election.

And while the city works on that growing list of issues that need to be addressed, Mayor Lee Brain is also gazing towards the future some twelve years from now and the prospect of creating a more sustainable city for the North coast.

On Monday night, City Council is set to receive the first draft of Mr. Brain's 2030 Sustainable City plans, a document first proposed a few years ago, that the mayor will share with City council members and the public for the first time at Monday's council session.

Yesterday Mr. Brain offered up a sneak preview of some of those themes, delivering a short overview of his plans through the social media stream of his civic Facebook page.

Mr. Brain streamed his presentation from Prince George, where he is attending meetings designed to set up Electric Vehicle charging stations across the region, with the Mayor offering up some background on those sessions in his five minute update, as well as to invite the public to attend the Monday night council session to learn more about his thoughts on the Prince Rupert of the future.

As part of his Facebook stream, Mr. Brain provided a bit of a thumbnail sketch at the lengthy list of areas that he is looking to address through his long term plan, with the Sustainable City concepts to then move into a community engagement process, seeking input from the public on issues such as climate change and other environmental issues and how to grow the economy on green initiatives.

"Come 2030 not only do we have a very robust and diversified port economy and traditional economy but we also have an economy around green initiatives, people being able to come for educational purposes, local energy production, wind turbine production that kind of thing" -- Mayor Lee Brain looking twelve years from now and some of the elements he hopes to bring to Prince Rupert

The Sustainable City concepts were first introduced in January of 2016, with Mayor noting some of themes that came out of the Placemaking conference of that year, a workshop event that seems to have provided for a bit of a blue print for the Mayor's passion for the theme of sustainable development over the last few years.
