Blog Watching: Week ending December 2, 2018

Over and over again, residents of the North Coast are reminded to be prepared for any eventuality just in case the Big one arrives on the coastal shores of British Columbia, and on Friday we all received a strong reminder of why we need to prepare as Anchorage, Alaska suffered a significant 7.0 magnitude earthquake.

Almost from the moment we posted our notes on the Alaska seismic event, the page clicker began to click, taking such a pace that by day's end, our Friday article had become the most read item of the week.

As for the remainder of our list of the five most read North Coast Review items of the week, CN Rail was featured twice, with readers exploring our themes on the plans for development of a new way to ship bitumen from Alberta's oil sands, as well as the 2018-19 Grain plan from the railway, which CN hopes will avoid some of the troubles that made last years shipment schedule a somewhat chaotic thing.

Our preview of this years Winterfest activities proved to be a popular item this week, while readers also found our look at a presentation by Michael Gurney of the Prince Rupert Arts Council to City Council to be worth checking out.

However the top story of the week came from just below the surface of the earth, as the seismic plates of Alaska shifted and delivered a major event to one of Alaska's largest cities.

Tsunami risk being evaluated as 7.0 magnitude earthquake strikes near Anchorage -- It's being listed as among some of the strongest earthquakes to strike Alaska in recent years and on Friday the 7.0 magnitude quake delivered a fair bit of damage to the Alaskan city, as the morning moved forward officials determined that there was no threat of tsunami for British Columbia  (posted November 30, 2018)

That article was followed by:

Will the CanaPux change views on the shipment of oil on the North Coast -- It's the kind of invention which could reshape Canada's resource export industry, with Canadian National Railway looking to a synthesized container for bitumen known as the CanaPux that could reduce environmental concerns when it comes to the shipment of oil.  (posted November 27, 2018)

Full weekend ahead as Prince rupert celebrates Winter Fest -- The annual celebration of the arrival of winter on the North Coast featured two days of activities that brought residents to a number of outdoor an indoor venues     (posted November  27, 2018)

CN Rail hopeful for less headaches as 2018 Grain shipment season gets underway -- With the bad memories of the winter of 2017-18 still on their minds, CN Rail has made a number of moves in the last year that they hope will deliver better delivery time lines for the grain shipment season ahead.      (posted November 29 , 2018)

Prince Rupert Arts Council quest for additional funding will have to wait until 2020 -- Prince Rupert City Council received a report on the work of the Prince Rupert Arts Council in the community from Arts council member Michael Gurney, who also delivered a call for additional funding for the organization. It was a request however that will have to wait at least a year to be considered, with the City having already set it's grant funding levels for 2019 and making plans to change the process for the future. More items of note from Prince Rupert Council can be found here.   (posted November 28 , 2018)
