No New Pavement yet, but lots of new lines as street painting gets underway in Prince Rupert

It's Road Painting season in Prince Rupert as crews from
Yellowhead Pavement Marking criss cross the city.

Drivers around Prince Rupert have been doing a slalom over the last few days, as street painting crews from the Prince George company Yellowhead Pavement Marking take to the streets of the city laying down some new paint on the city's roadways.

It's a process which for some may seem a bit unusual in its timing, considering how the City hasn't embarked on its highly touted and expansive road repair plans for 2019.

Driving around town, we've even noticed a number of locations where the new paint is being placed over the ever growing list of pot holes and roadway divots that mark many of the city's routes; something that seems kind of strange considering the paint will be chewed up once the road repairs begin, requiring another coat at some other point in time we imagine.

For now while we await the launch and details on the city's Road Repair 2019 plan, the road marking crews have been busy focusing their work on the east side of the city at the start of the week and moving into the downtown core into Tuesday afternoon

This years road repair project will be boosted by some significant extra funding from the Federal government which doubled its returns on the Gas Tax last month, which was noted at budget time by the City's Financial Officer.

April 10 -- You filled up your gas tank, and now the city plans to fill some potholes and pave some roads
April 10 -- Council maintains 2 per cent tax cut as part of Budget approval Monday evening
March 20 -- Pre Election Budget turns on the spending taps for Federal Government

Even though the cash from the Feds for the most part was along the lines of found money, the additional funding that is to be directed towards the city's roads was also included in Mayor Lee Brain's listing of accomplishments following City Council's work on the budget for 2019.
