Rainmakers look for some luck of the Irish at Vancouver College Emerald Tourney

The Charles Hays Senior Boys Basketball squad is in the Lower mainland this weekend, hitting the court today in the first of a busy schedule of top tier basketball at the Vancouver College Emerald tournament.

The annual event brings together many of the teams that will find themselves on the courts in Langley at Provincials in March and serves as a good measuring stick for the Charles Hays squad as it heads towards the home stretch of their regular season.

Twelve teams are set for tip off today at the Alumni and Christian Brothers gyms, with teams spanning the listings of AAAA, AAA and AA basketball in British Columbia.

Along with the Rainmakers, the three days of hoops in the Big City will feature host Vancouver College, Semiahmoo, Walnut Grove, Abbotsford, Lord Tweedsmuir, Belmont, Heritage Woods, Centennial, Vernon, Terry Fox and Oak Bay.

Mel and Ryan Bishop take the Rainmakers into Tournament action today with their first game against Walnut Grove with a 3:45 tip off.

If all goes well for the Charles Hays Seniors they will navigate the tourney schedule to the very end and the Championship Final showcase on Saturday evening at 5PM.

Last night the Rainmakers got in some bonus basketball, with a pre tournament tune up match against New Westminster. The tightly contested game saw the lead move back and forth between the two teams, with the Charles Hays boys coming out on the winning side of an 85-80 final.

You can scout out some of the teams that will be participating in the tournament from Howard Tsumara's Varsity Letters blog, which is an exceptional resource to keep up on the state of basketball at the high school level in BC.

From this weeks edition they have posted the latest rankings for all four levels of basketball in the province and once again, the Rainmakers continue to hold the top spot at the AA level.

The Top Spot placement in AA is one that the Rainmakers have maintained since the start of the 2019-20 campaign.

According to the Vancouver College Saints twitter feed, the games that take place in the Alumni game will be available for viewing through a live stream available here.
