Trail building the sole Agenda topic for tonight's Prince Rupert Council Session

Prince Rupert City Council will be asked for a letter of support towards
a rehabilitation project for the Omeica Trail on the city's west side

A collective of local partners looking to work on a trail on the city's west side will be seeking a letter of support from Prince Rupert City Council, with plans in mind towards rehabilitation of a trail that leads eastward from the Omineca area of the City.

The outline of the trail from the past shows that it was originally set up to link the Omenica area with Wantage Road, providing for access to the Mount Hays Road.

The project if it moves forward will feature the participation of Prince Rupert Aboriginal Community Services Society, Kaien Island Trail Enhancement Society, Hecate Strait Employment Development Society, Youth Restoration Project and Ministry of Children & Family Development.

The remediation program is designed as one which will use restoration of the Omineca Trail as the impetus for generating public awareness of disparities in our community due to racism, while also seeking to address barriers to employment by recruiting youth/young adults to be provided with a variety of training.

The group is seeking funding for their project through a Federal Anti-Racism program

The work will take place in four phases from planning to recruitment of participants, through to the actual restoration work and then the Grand Opening. It's anticipated that the Omineca restoration work will take up to 36 weeks from start to finish.

The actual work of rebuilding the Omineca trail will take up approximately 12 of the 36 weeks.
