Blog Watching: Week Ending March 7, 2021

COVID-19 once again has made for a story generating much interest across the city these last seven days, with Prince Rupert continuing to top the BC CDC listings for the Northwest, as well as for the relay of a number of potential exposure alerts, including one at the city's homeless shelter.

Other themes of the note for the week,  included a call for some assistance from area residents from the spouse of one of the crew members who died following a tug incident south of Kitimat in February.  That as Judy Carlick-Pearson starts a change.org petition to have the tug raised from the bottom of Gardener Canal to assist with the investigation into the sinking.

A pair of liquid storage tanks near Fairview Container Terminal may not be part of the landscape much longer with the Prince Rupert Port Authority putting a proposal for demolition out for bids with the BC Bid website.

And our look at an online and social media campaign to attract new workers and residents to the Prince Rupert area has had a strong reception, with those behind Make Prince Rupert Home noting that it has found a large audience in the first two weeks of its launch.

Of our five stories of note on the week,  the surge of COVID in Prince Rupert dominated our collection of items on the week, making for the most read story of the week.

COVID  case reports spike upwards for Prince Rupert, which remains atop Northwest listings for third consecutive week with 73 cases recorded -- It was another week of increasing COVID case reports in Prince Rupert, marking the third week that the city has topped the BC CDC list for northwest BC. As the results were release, the city learned of two more COVID situations of note, the closure of the Prince Rupert Library and a notice of potential exposure for the city's homeless shelter Cranes' Crossing.    (posted March 3, 2021)

That article was followed by:

A change.org petition looks to raise sunken tug boat from Gardener Canal in quest for answers to marine incident of February 11th -- The widow of one of the crew members of a tug boat that sank south of Kitimat in February has launched a petition, seeking the help of the public to deliver the message that the vessel should be raised as part of the investigation in the sinking   (posted March 2, 2021)

November 30 target for Prince Rupert Port Authority for removal of Fairview Bulk Liquid Storage facility -- A pair of old naval storage tanks may meet their demise this summer, as the Prince Rupert Port Authority puts out a Request for Proposals for work near the Fairview Container Terminal.  (posted March 4, 2021)

As Prince Rupert's COVID count continues to rise, it's time for a bit more explanation as to why from Northern Health -- As the case counts continue to rise week after week, the lack of information from officials is spurring on widespread speculation through social media as to the cause of the surge of COVID in the last month    (posted March 5, 2021)

Over 150,000 views so far from those exploring the option of Making Prince Rupert Home --  The recently launched initiative to attract workers and new residents to Prince Rupert has seen a strong volume of interest since the mid February launch, though with it has come some local criticism that the local housing situation may not be up to the task of attracting newcomers.   (posted March 2, 2021)
