While the municipal and School District elections don't come up until October, the Prince Rupert Labour Council, soon to be rebranded as the North Coast Labour Council, is looking to learn more about how would be candidates may lean on a number of key issues.
As part of their process of providing for endorsement for the fall campaign, the local labour organization has offered up two surveys for interested candidates to fill out, each focusing on a range of themes that the organization has identified for some expansive thought for those seeking public office.
For potential City Council candidates the list comes to 17 questions, among some of the themes, questions on past community involvement, what are the critical issues for the community, and how would candidates make civic government more inclusive, open and responsive to the electorate.
Some social and labour themes also make for the main focus of the survey, with questions on contracting out public services, public/private partnerships and areas of pay and affordability issues for families.
Housing, Green initiatives, diversity hiring policies and actions towards Truth and Reconciliation also make for part of the Labour Council narrative for Council hopefuls.
There's a bit more work ahead for potential School Board Trustees to provide answers for, some of the 22 questions follow the same vein as those for City Council, however there are a number of education specific themes explored in the survey.
Of those, some focus is put on what respondents believe are the most important issues for schools and how education should be funded, both of which are near the top of the list as well as whether candidates believe that Education should be considered an essential service.
How to expand on current programs or introduce new ones, thoughts on the curriculum additions for Sexual and gender identity and what work candidates would put in towards Truth and Reconciliation also form a key element of the Labour Council overview.
Both Survey's can be accessed here, the deadline to provide the answers is coming up fast however, set for this coming Friday, June 10th.
The Labour Council will discuss on June 23rd wether or not there will be another opportunity to participate in the endorsement process prior to the October election period.
