It was a short gathering of Prince Rupert Council on Monday evening, those in attendance taking to the first steps of Final approval of the 2022 Budget, with a first, second and third reading granted to the two bylaws to put in place the Financial Plan and Property tax provisions for 2022.
In attendance in Council Chambers were Mayor Lee Brain, along with Councillors Wade Niesh, Reid Skelton-Morven and Nick Adey, participating by video were Councillors Barry Cunningham and Gurvinder Randhawa. Indications from the live stream suggest that Councillor Blair Mirau was absent for the vote.
The Chief Financial Officer Corrine Bomben was also in attendance but had no further guidance to offer the Council members on the Financial Plan and Poperty tax themes.
From start to finish it took the Council members just under two minutes to chart the financial course for the year ahead, the twin bylaws the only items on the Agenda and the Council members had no other business to raise during the course of the 5 PM session.
As it was one week ago, Councillor Randhawa was the only one to cast a vote against adoption of the Financial Plan and the proposed 3.63 per cent tax hike, the Councillor last week noted of his preference that the City use the Legacy Fund to cushion the financial impact this year for taxpayers.
The final adoption for the two bylaws will come most likely with the next Regular Council session on May 9th, once given its final adoption the City's Financial Office can then begin the work of preparation of the 2022 property tax bills for delivery later this Spring.
Council also included a Closed Session for their Monday work, that taking place at 5:30, the reason for the need to close the meeting to the public was listed as related to litigation or potential litigation affecting the municipality.
