Blog Watching: Week ending August 11, 2019

An Emergency Responder file once again claimed the top spot in our review of the five most read items of the last seven days, with officials responding to an early morning call of a truck incident near Topley that claimed the life of a Prince Rupert bound passenger.

Also finding a large audience was our look at a study from Maclean's magazine that has delivered some positive news for both Terrace and Prince Rupert.

A financial incentive from the Province of Alberta directed towards Indigenous supporters of pipelines and other resource developments in that province has attracted the interest of a group which would like to run an energy corridor from Northeastern Alberta to a terminal near Lax Kw'alaams.

Counting the cash is only good if you follow the right procedures, as the BC Liberals have found, after they are rapped on the knuckles and assessed a fine for not following recently revised campaign financing regulations closely enough.

And the troubled fishing season continued to make news on the North Coast this week with UFAWU declaring the season a disaster and Lax Kw'alaams expressing their frustration at how DFO has handled the issues this summer.

However, the top item of the last seven days, comes from the files of the Houston/Smithers RCMP and a tragic recent highway incident..

Highway fatality near Topley claims life of Prince Rupert bound passenger  -- An early morning traffic incident on Thursday west of Topley resulted in the tragic passing of a passenger of a westbound vehicle, with Smithers RCMP indicating from their investigation that the travellers were bound for Prince Rupert. No further details have been released since the Thursday report.   (posted August 8, 2019)

That article was followed by:

Prince Rupert, Terrace claim Top Fifty spots in latest Maclean's survey of Canadian communities  -- Two Northwest communities cracked the top layers of the Maclean's Best Communities in Canada survey, with Terrace listed at Number 35 and Prince Rupert 46.     (posted  August 9, 2019)

Province of Alberta launches "Indigenous Litigation Fund" to support legal action in support of Alberta resources; Eagle Spirit Energy set to be first to apply -- A political initiative from the Alberta government is of interest to a First Nations led group which is looking to build an energy corridor across Northern BC leading to a shipment terminal at Grassy Point, near Lax Kw'alaams     (posted August  9, 2019)

BC Liberals face fine for election finance rules violation related to a Prince Rupert contractor donation -- Not following the new rules on election financing put the BC Liberal Party in some hot water with Elections BC, which issued a fine over the processing of a donation from a Prince Rupert business owner.      (posted  August 7, 2019)

Frustrated from DFO discussions: Lax Kw'alaams to consider coordinated fishery -- The state of the 2019 salmon fishery is not very strong and adding on to the frustrations of local fishermen have been some of the decision making from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, a topic which has made for some planning for the weeks ahead from Lax Kw'alaams.  Their concerns came to the forefront in the same week that UFAWU-Unifor declared this salmon season a disaster and asked for Federal and provincial assistance for those who work in the industry     (posted  August 7, 2019)
