When it comes to compensation for stranded travellers, AMHS says Sorry but ...

Having fielded a number of calls from upset customers, the Alaska Marine Highway System has issued an update on its policy on compensation for inconvenienced passengers, and the main takeaway would seem to be Sorry but ...

In a Notice to Travellers issued Wednesday, the AMHS advised that as reflected in their regulations and published Travel Policies, the ferry service abides by standard industry practises. With the AMHS providing refunds for cancelled sailings, but no compensation for passengers for consequential expenses incurred as a result of the cancellations.

The Marine Highway Service also makes note of its recommendations for passengers that they look towards travel insurance to cover travel disruption expenses not compensated by AMHS.


As for the dispute it has now entered the eighth day, with vessels tied up at ports up and down the Alaska panhandle.  There have been no further updates on the state of negotiations between the Marine highway and the Inlandboatman's Union since a weekend of mediation talks broke on Sunday with no breakthrough to report.
